Below is a brief description of a SMART IEP. More information is in Chapter Twelve of our book, Wrightslaw: From Emotions to Advocacy, 2nd Edition.

The SMART IEP is based on the child's present levels of performance, includes measurable goals and objectives, and ways to monitor the child's progress during instruction.

SMART IEPs will teach you to write goals and objectives that are:

  • Specific
  • Measurable
  • Active
  • Realistic and relevant
  • Time-limited
